The Story Behind the River

Riverfront Pale began as a quiet plot of family land beside the water. What it has become — a handful of cottages, a garden kitchen, and a lot of good mornings — is the work of people who never stopped believing a slow place could still matter.

How It Began

A house that was never meant to be a hotel —

Riverfront Pale sits on land that has belonged to the same family for three generations. It was a home first — mango trees planted by a grandmother, a well dug by hand, a verandah built for afternoon naps. When the house grew quiet, instead of letting it fall still, we opened the gate.

What started with two spare rooms and a shared table has grown, slowly and on purpose, into the cottages and gardens you find today. We kept the mango trees. We kept the well. We just added more chairs.

Our Journey So Far

A few milestones along the way —

2014 The first two rooms open

Friends of friends started asking to stay. We said yes, and cooked them dinner besides.

2017 The garden kitchen is built

An open-air table beside the vegetable patch, so meals could be as unhurried as everything else.

2019 Three cottages added

Built by local craftsmen using reclaimed laterite and old roof tiles wherever we could find them.

2022 The pavilion and river deck

A quiet spot for evenings, built low so it never competes with the view.

Today Still a family-run house

Bigger than it was, but run the same way it always has been — by the people who live here.

Most of the people who work here grew up down the road. They know the river, the seasons, and — more often than not — the names of the guests who keep coming back.
